Christ Is the Source of Everlasting Contentment (April 13, 2023)
“Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing
into this world, and it is certain we can
carry nothing out. And
having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8)
We live in an age of restlessness and discontent!
Seemingly never satisfied with our possessions and positions in life, we
constantly strive for more. Many people are consumed by the pursuit of wealth,
influence, pleasure, and other desires of the deceitful human heart to the
extremes of covetousness and idolatry. Discontentment is part of our fallen nature
as the inhabitants of a world fractured by sin and temporarily under Satan’s dominion
of deception. However, to continually chase the fancies of the restless human heart
is to live contrary to God’s Word which teaches us to be content in all our
circumstances. In Christ alone, we find deeply fulfilling and lasting
contentment!
“For I have
learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” (Philippians
4:11)
Despite His sufferings for the sake of spreading the
gospel, the apostle Paul became a model of contentment that can guide us to
live obedient, fruitful lives for Christ despite life’s hardships and trials.
Paul understood that while worldly treasures may yield momentary gratification,
they are temporal and cannot bring lasting satisfaction. True fulfillment can
only be found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who offers believers
something the world cannot give us—the endless contentment of knowing that we
have abundant and eternal life. Like Paul, we serve the same trustworthy God who
promises to reward our faithfulness, obedience, and contentment in Christ with
imperishable riches!
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living
hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an
inheritance incorruptible and undefiled
and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you…” (1
Peter 1:3-4).
