A Mother’s Love (May 12, 2023)
“For her
worth is far above rubies.”
(Proverbs 31:10)
Love is the most powerful force in this vast universe and the very nature
of the awe-inspiring God Who magnificently created it. Exceeded only by God’s
matchless affection for us, the love of a mother is a priceless treasure. Tried,
tested, tender, and true, a mother’s love is one of God’s greatest gifts. This
Sunday affords a special opportunity for each of us to express heartfelt
appreciation to our mothers for the godly blessing of her love or honor the
memory of those mothers, including my dearly-departed mom, Willie Mae Ray, who,
in the glorious presence of Jesus in heaven, now await joyful reunions with
their Christian family members.
One of America’s greatest
presidents, Abraham Lincoln said: “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to
my angel mother.” In many ways, mothers are like angels sent by God to provide
the loving nurture, protection, and training that lay solid foundations upon
which their children can build godly, productive, and fulfilling lives. A
mother’s love is warm and gentle, to be sure, but it necessarily must be tough
at times. Just as her love is defined by acts of caring, comfort, and compassion,
a mother’s discipline is one of the highest expressions of that unwavering love
and concern for the long-term well-being of her kids.
We owe a debt of deep gratitude
to our Christian mothers and, above all, to the gracious God who richly blessed
us to be their sons and daughters. We are indebted to our moms not only for the
tenderness of their unfailing love but for their tears, tirelessness, toil,
tidiness, teaching, and the biblical truth they have instilled in us. We can never
repay our mothers for the affectionate care that they have shown us in
countless ways, reflecting God’s love. As selfless as they are, however, our
mothers ask only for our love in return. After all, the humble giving of
themselves for the good of their children and families is what Christian
motherhood is all about!
“Strength and honor are
her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with
wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the
ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children
rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises
her: "Many daughters have done well, But you excel them
all." Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears
the Lord, she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:25-30)
