Jesus Christ -- Servant and Savior (June 12, 2023)
“But he who is greatest among you
shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles
himself will be exalted.”
(Matthew
23:11-12)
One of the defining aspects of Christian living is
service, the sharing of ourselves and our God-given talents, resources, and time
for the benefit and betterment of other people. Contrary to the ways of a world
full of selfishness and pride, service requires humility! With lowly meekness,
we are called to put others above ourselves in an effort to address human needs
and relieve suffering. This sharing of the blessings that God has graciously
provided us with those who are less fortunate is far more rewarding than
anything we can do to promote our own prosperity or self-satisfaction. Humble
service above self to humanity models the supreme example set by Jesus Christ who
came to earth to serve and to save mankind.
“The Son of Man did not come to
be served, but
to serve, and to
give His life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28)
One of Jesus’ most submissive acts of service followed
the Last Supper when He took a towel, poured water into a basin, and washed His
disciples’ feet. “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to
you,” instructed Jesus (John 13:15). On a dark afternoon the next day,
Jesus’ greatest act of love and service to humanity was completed when He triumphantly
cried out from the cross: ““It is finished!” And
bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” (John 19:30) Concluding
His mission of service and sacrifice, Jesus willingly died to pay the penalty for
your sins and mine, giving believers the certain hope of eternal life. Freed
from bondage to sin, we are empowered to be good and faithful earthly servants
to our risen LORD.
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty;
only do not use liberty
as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
(Galatians
5:13)
