A Time for Rest (March 20, 2024)
“Rest in the Lord, and
wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:7)
Successful lives are built on a foundation of vision, hard work, and
perseverance. A strong work ethic has always been an integral part of the
pursuit of the American dream. However, we should never neglect the fact that
these physical bodies get tired and it is vitally important to give them rest
that renews the strength needed to press toward our goals. Someone once said, “Rest is not idleness…(and) is by no means a waste of time.” Living
productive and fulfilling lives requires a balance of diligent work and reviving
rest. Proper repose recharges our physical, mental, and spiritual batteries and
allows us to avoid burnout that drains our stamina, zeal, and creativity!
Jesus recognized the importance of making adequate time for rest and
relaxation. As Christ conducted His earthly ministry of powerful preaching,
insightful teaching, and miraculous works, huge throngs of people were
attracted to Him, putting heavy demands upon His time and stamina as God in
human flesh. Jesus regularly sought refuge and solitude in quiet places to
commune with His heavenly Father in prayer and meditation and refresh Himself
physically and spiritually. “And when He
had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.
Now when evening came, He was alone there.” (Matthew 14:23)
The LORD also encouraged His disciples to take care of themselves physically and
spiritually. Upon their return after having been sent out two by two with
authority to teach and cast out unclean spirits, Jesus told the Twelve, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted
place and rest a while. For there
were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So they
departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.” (Mark
6:31) We too need to regularly get away
from the stresses and burdens of life and rejuvenate ourselves for the work
that lies ahead. Christ invites each of His followers to rest in the soothing
peace of His presence!
