Trust the Captain of Your Salvation (May 30, 2024)
“…for the Lord your
God is He who goes
with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” (Deuteronomy 20:4)
Life can be viewed as a battleground where we are engaged on multiple
fronts in deadly warfare against a host of imposing enemies that seek to defeat
and destroy us. In the physical world, many face such formidable foes as disease,
addiction, poverty, relational issues, terrorism, hunger, natural and manmade
disasters, and countless unseen dangers that lurk in the darkness of an evil
world eager to strike. In the spiritual realm, Satan and his demonic forces seek
to deceptively lead us into captivity to our fleshly lusts and entrap us in
servitude to our sinful desires the ultimate consequence of which is death. We
must be vigilant because our “adversary
the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
“But
thanks be to God, who
gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1
Corinthians 15:57)
As physical and spiritual warfare rages all around us, we can be assured
as followers of Jesus Christ that while the battles of life in a fallen world
are unceasing, the war has already been won! Christ sent Satan to a crushing
defeat at Calvary two thousand years ago when the LORD died to free us from
sin’s bondage and left an empty tomb when He arose three days later, triumphant
over spiritual death. We can all share in Jesus’ resounding victory over sin
and death when we ally ourselves with Him through faith and, by God’s amazing
grace, claim the spoils of this epic struggle—abundant and eternal life! In
every battle of life, trusting believers and soldiers of the cross can be
certain that Jesus is “the captain of their salvation.” (Hebrews 2:10)
