And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed.” (Luke 1:45-48)

In the Christmas story told in Luke’s Gospel, we see in Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, an example of faith that we should seek to follow. Sent by God to tell the young virgin that she’d been chosen to give birth to the Son of God and the Savior of mankind, the angel Gabriel said: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus(Luke 1:30-32)

Responding to her obvious question of how that could be, Gabriel explained that Mary, who had never known a man intimately, would be overcome by the Holy Spirit and overshadowed by “the power of the Highest.” (Luke 1:35) Mary’s obedient answer to this shocking announcement showed a maturity of faith in a girl most likely only in her teenage years. “Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

God also has a plan for your life and mine! The scale may not be nearly as monumental, but He can use us mightily like He did Mary. We must respond to God’s call to serve by obediently stepping out in faith, enabling His divine will to be done. We must put our trust into action and allow God to work through us to accomplish His purpose. When called by God to do a particular task, we too find favor by trustingly answering, “Let it be to me according to your word.”
