The Software of the Soul (April 3, 2025)

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

When we look at another person that we know, we immediately recognize them by their external physical features with which we have become familiar. But do we see them for who they really are? Certainly not! The real you cannot be seen or touched because it is not physical. The real you and I are not characterized by mass (in my case, a few pounds too heavy) nor mortality. The real you is what is loosely referred to as the soul or spirit which has no mass and is immortal. When we view someone, we see only their physical body or the outer structure, in which their soul is temporarily housed. To use computer terminology, the human body serves as our temporal hardware. The soul, on the other hand, is the software that continues to exist after our body dies.

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

Unlike the physical body that deteriorates and ultimately passes away, the human soul is eternal and, as such, will continue forever somewhere in the spiritual realm. The soul of every human being will inhabit eternity in one of two very real destinations, either in the paradise of heaven in the presence of God or the place of punishment called hell in the company of Satan. Whether or not we spend the timelessness of eternity in the peacefulness of heaven or in the hopelessness of hell depends exclusively upon whether or not we have a faith-based personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus paved the way for everyone to avoid eternal torment and to share His glory when He died on the cross for our sins. Trust in Christ and rejoice that one day your soul will be with Him forever in an imperishable, glorified body like that of our risen LORD!

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” (1 John 3:2)
