Obedience Glorifies God (May 30, 2023)
“If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” (John 13:17)
God promises to bless those who humbly seek to do
His will, to live by the truth of His Word, and to follow the narrow way that
leads to an eternal home in heaven. When we accept Jesus’ sacrifice at Calvary
for our sins and are saved by God’s grace, we become new creations filled with
the Holy Spirit who seals our salvation and guides us to follow Christ’s
example of obedience to His heavenly Father. Our hearts and minds are slowly transformed
and we are ultimately changed by the power of God into the likeness of His
beloved Son. Our selfish human attitudes and behaviors are gradually aligned
with God’s sovereign will and we no longer desire to follow worldly moral,
social, and cultural values but seek to live in obedience to God’s standards.
“But
this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be
your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have
commanded you, that it may be well with you.’” (Jeremiah 7:23)
Not only does compliance with God’s
commands bring showers of blessing to believers but obedience reflects our love
for Him. “But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is
perfected in him. By this we know that we are in
Him.” (1 John 2:5) Obedience is an expression of our
faith and our desire to allow Jesus to rule as LORD
of our lives. “Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name.” (Romans 1:5) In addition to opening avenues of blessing and
manifesting our love for and our faith in Christ, obedience brings honor and
glory to a God who is faithful and trustworthy. We fulfill our ultimate purpose
of glorifying God by living in fellowship with Him and doing His perfect will.
“Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
