God’s Sovereign Sufficiency (March 5, 2026)

Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.” (1 Samuel 30:6)

Hunted by King Saul of Israel who sought to kill him, David and his band of 600 men fled to the land of the Philistines. Once, returning from a military campaign, David and his band of warriors found that the Philistine city where they had been given refuge had been completely burned and their women and children, including David’s two wives, taken captive during an enemy raid. Greatly distressed and fearing for his own life, David refused to wallow in self-pity or rely upon his own faculties and wisdom. Faced with seemingly insurmountable adversity, he asked for divine direction. David wisely sought encouragement and strength from the LORD his God! As a result of God’s empowerment, David and his men were able to rescue the captives and recover everything that had been lost as well as take plunder from the defeated enemy.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” (Psalm 46:1-2).

To varying degrees of severity, like David, we too occasionally face hardships and trials of life that overwhelm us with anxiety, try our patience, and put our faith to the supreme test. How do you respond when your life seemingly implodes and comes crashing in upon you, shattering your hopes and dreams? When confronted by a devastating calamity that engulfs you in despair and threatens you with resounding defeat, to whom or what do you turn for answers and solutions? As Christians, we have as our faithful ally the Almighty God of the universe whose grace is ample for all of our circumstances and whose sovereign sufficiency defies our comprehension. Rather than feel sorry for ourselves and seek to pass the blame for our plight, we are wise to strengthen ourselves in the LORD our God and allow His power to perfect our weakness!

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12::9)
